Synchronisation Challenges

Network Synchronisation is a fundamental cornerstone of any telecommunications network. The correlation between effective network synchronisation and quality of service has long been established, yet the planning of synchronisation distribution is still often a manual (pencil and paper) exercise.

With the complexity of modern networks, manual methods do not give the surety of performance required. We have found that investment in expensive synchronisation equipment also does not guarantee effective or consistent synchronisation (95 percent of all synchronisation functionality in a network lies in the traffic elements). Hence synchronisation investment is wasted without careful planning and deployment.

If the synchronization of any multi-vendored telecommunications networks has not been designed, implemented and managed correctly or the quality level of the synchronization references within the network will drift. This will have a huge impact on the efficiency of the networks capacity, and its ability to deliver the QoS required by today’s customers.

The stability of the E1 TDM structure is directly related to the stability of the Radio Access Network and today’s IP centric Radio Access Networks (being time dependant the E1 structure) requires delivery of synchronization to a very high quality level (defined by global standards, and equating to ~50ppb at base station level, to provide a reasonable QoS to the end user).

Our solution : Product and Services Profile

Our solution portfolio covers a range of legacy and next generation technologies including fixed and wireless from the core of the network to the edge, synchronisation and timing, network management and network planning tools.

Solutions we have delivered span the globe and to multiple industry sectors including fixed and mobile network operators, communication system integrators, Education, utilities, government & military forces.

Our highly trained and accredited members deliver full end to end services ranging from consultation, design, installation, training to customer care and maintenance.

Our Consulting Framework

Stage 1 - Network Capture
We can accurately capture and model individual synchronisation and traffic elements within the TDM & IP distribution networks. Prior to commencement of consultancy the scope of the project is discussed and agreed between the customer and the Sonata Systems consultancy team undertaking the project along with a commercial representative from Sonata Systems.

Stage 2 - Network Modelling
We can accurately capture and model individual synchronisation and traffic elements within the TDM & IP distribution networks.

Prior to commencement of consultancy the scope of the project is discussed and agreed between the customer and the Sonata Systems consultancy team undertaking the project along with a commercial representative from Sonata Systems.

Stage 3 - Network Simulation
Once the network model has been completed and mutually accepted by the customer the vital stage of network simulation can be performed. The goal of this stage is to identify the current network issues as described by the customer and identify any further issues that may also reside within the network.

In addition the simulation will then lead to the identification of the desired an optimum synchronisation configuration utilising the existing network equipment.

Stage 4 – Synchronisation Design Implementation & Operational Support
Upon completion of the simulation phase a network design and associated methodology to achieve the design will be presented and documented. This provides a blue print for the implementation of the synchronisation design – This can also be supported at the clients network operations centre by the Sonata Systems consultancy team – This results the handover of the network file for the operator. Upon handover of the stable network, Sonata Systems will provide the synchronisation tool SyncArchitect with the operators network build incorporated – This enables the operator to maintain, diagnose, plan and change the synchronisation within the network real time and vastly improving the stability of the network independent of the vendors.
